Mike, while working at Salem many years ago (early 1980s) I was operating the Incore system and had the leak detector alarm. The location with the leak ran much slower than the others as it was withdrawn and I noted the location. Once the detectors were returned to the shielded location a entry into the seal table room was made and the leaking thimble was warm to the touch (recommend using a Infrared temp inst nowadays) and close the isolation valve. The RCS water ( steam/water mix) had made it into all the 10 paths as they are cross connected at their drains and up into the 5 path/drives somewhat and condensed.. We continued to use the system for a month or 2 before the outage to perform the required surveillances, although it took much longer than usual like 6-8 hours to gather all the necessary trace data.. The system was disassembled and deconed/cleaned of boric acid and reassembled during the refueling outage. All the thimbles were dewatered and cleaned prior to the next cycle. The thimbles were replaced in mid 80s with a CE tube in tube design, and protective devices installed in the core plate to shield the thimble from cross flow induced vibration causing the wear.
You can contact Paul Lippie at Salem he may have more details to share if he can locate the old records on this job.
Hope this helps. Ken

Natalie A Yonker/NUC/VANCPO WER To Michael 04/25/2006 01:57 Fanguy/NUC/VANCPOWER@VANCPOWER PM cc Subject URGENT Incore Question!
These questions are for anyone with a Moveable Incore Detector System.
Surry is currently in a Refueling Outage and is looking for anyone who has any experience or history with finding RCS water in their 10-path boxes. During one of the last monthly flux maps before our outage, we briefly received the leak detection alarm while scanning all 5 detectors into the core. During troubleshooting this alarm was received again while
inserting
just the 'D' detector into the same thimble as before. On subsequent maps 'D' detector has been getting stuck while scanning (and only a couple
cases
while inserting). Manually the detector can be withdrawn and re-scanned, but it would continue to get stuck in various, and eventually all of its 10-Path thimbles. 'C' detector also became stuck while in Emergency in a couple of 'D' thimbles, as well as a couple of its own 10-Path thimbles. We have discovered a small amount of water near the drain hole of the 'D' 10-path box, but cannot determine which thimble it originated from based
on
visual inspection. 'D' detector has NOT had any trouble in Calibrate.
Does anyone have any experience or contacts that may be able to advise us of possibilities associated with this issue? I believe that we have a minor leak from a thimble on the 'D' drive, most likely the one that the leak alarms came in on. Even if we identify the source of the leak, will we be able to insert our 'D' and 'C' detectors to the top of the core in the other thimbles that it got stuck in after the outage. Surry has no experience with a leak, or finding water in 10-Path boxes. Thanks.
