DC Cook Reactor Engineering is looking at possible extraneous work to remove from the refueling outages.
Cook is a PWR which performs a fuel core offload and reload.
Currently our Quality Control department performs a 4-sided camera inspection of the assemblies as they leave containment on unload and as they enter containment on reload.
We are looking at reducing the inspections to occur only on unload, eliminating the reload inspection.
My Questions:
What organization at your plant performs the fuel inspections?
Do you perform the inspection on Unload?
Do you perform the inspection on Reload?
What method do you use to perform the inspection, 4 cameras, 1 camera, binoculars, eyeball, etc.?
thanks

Catawba Nuclear Station performs 4-sided camera inspections of fuel assemblies during Ultrasonic Fuel Cleaning in no-mode. Cameras are mounted on top of the UFC equipment. The inspection equipment and evolution is performed by Maintenance - Fuel Handling. Reactor Engineers (supplemented by engineers from GO fuels group, if necessary) reviews all video prior to reload. I would
Questions:
What organization at your plant performs the fuel inspections? Maintenance - Fuel Handling with Reactor Engineering reviewing video
Do you perform the inspection on Unload? No, During fuel cleaning in no-mode.
Do you perform the inspection on Reload? No, During fuel cleaning in no-mode.
What method do you use to perform the inspection, 4 cameras, 1 camera, binoculars, eyeball, etc.? 6 cameras mounted on top of 2 UFC cans to capture 4 sides of fuel assemblies from either can.

My Questions:

Do you perform the inspection on Unload? Response: Yes
Do you perform the inspection on Reload? Response: We inspect the top of all the fuel scheduled to be reloaded in the Spent Fuel Pool prior to reload.
What method do you use to perform the inspection, 4 cameras, 1 camera, binoculars, eyeball, etc.? Response: Implementing a 4-sided in-cavity camera system that inspects the fuel as it is pulled up from the core into the manipulator crane mast. We demonstrated use of a single-sided camera during previous outage with good results. It also sees the bottom nozzle, but at an angle, not directly below. Cameras sit on cavity floor just outside the vessel 90 degrees apart.
thanks

Do you perform the inspection on Unload? Fuel handlers note anything they observe but no formal inspection is performed. If anything is noted, a formal inspection is performed prior to reload.
Do you perform the inspection on Reload? Any fuel from previous cycles that was stored in the SFP during the last cycle and is now being reloaded, procedurally requires a four sided inspection. Other than that only the fuel assembly IDs are verified.
What method do you use to perform the inspection, 4 cameras, 1 camera, binoculars, eyeball, etc.? If required, one camera is used.
thanks
