Greetings from Byron,
At the end of a refueling outage, we "check out" the Moveable Incore Detector System (MIDS) prior to it being needed for the first flux map. The checkout is essentially like a flux map, but no data is taken - we run the detectors through all the passes to Top of Core to ensure that each thimble is accessible and that no other problems exist (or if problems are found, that they are fixed before the system is needed for the flux map).
Currently, one of the prerequisites for this checkout is that Containment must be evacuated due to the possibility of personnel over-exposure from the MIDS. It is a challenge every outage to evacuate containment for this checkout. Therefore, we are looking at the possibility of evacuating only certain areas of containment when the MIDS are in use during the outage. This will not apply to at-power operations, as Containment will still be required to be free of personnel at those times. We are trying to get a preliminary feel for what the rest of the industry does in terms of using the MIDS while personnel are in Containment in an outage.
(1) Do you checkout the system prior to its use in a flux map at the end of a refueling outage?
(2) IF you do such a checkout, do you need evacuate containment, or can you run the MIDS while personnel are in containment?
a) Are your incore drives located outside your bio wall?
(3) If you do NOT evacuate Containment:
a) how do you control personnel entry to the affected areas?
b) what areas do you control?
c) how did you get your site to accept this practice?
(4) If possible, please supply a contact (name, phone, e-mail) of a knowledgeable Radiation Protection (RP) individual or Health Physicist (HP) at your site who we could contact for further information on this topic.
Thanks!
