Michael, We often have to replace power range detectors during refueling outages. Turkey Point has a history of water leakage into the excore detector wells resulting in degradation to the excore detectors. We recently changed to titanium housed detectors on the intermediate range and power range detectors to improve the lifetime (more corrosion resistant). Procedurally we require the Power Range High Flux Trip setpoint to be set at 55% and only after acceptable NIS Calibration of all the detectors (as developed from a flux map at 48%), do we reset the high flux trip setpoint to 108%. This email is being sent out for North Anna Reactor Engineering. North Anna (3 loop Westinghouse) is planning to replace a PRNI in their next outage. The question is do other utilities put any special measure in place for startup due to the new detector? Are your Hi Flux Trips extremely low? Is the startup performed with the NI channel in TRIP? Zinc Injection and CIPS/AOA

South Texas is contemplating performing zinc injection to reduce crud and doses. However, as a high duty plant, we are also worried about kicking off CIPS/AOA. Up to now, we have not had this phenomenon - and I'd like to stay away from it. I would like to get the reactor engineers' take on (1) your opinion on zinc injection v CIPS (2) if your plant has performed Zn injection, a. what consideration was given to potential CIPS issues? b. what has been your experience with the core? (3) If your plant has decided not to pursue Zn injection, what were the reasons (was CIPS a factor)? Thank you for your response. Surry Reactivity Management Self Assessment Additional Questions

Surry Operations and Reactor Engineering departments are performing a Self Assessment on our Reactivity Management program this week. An email survey was recently sent out in support of this SA. Our thanks go out to all those that responded. We also have a few follow up questions. If it would be possible, please respond to these few questions within the next 2 days to James_Shell(a)dom.com. Again thanks for your participation in our Self Assessment! 1. What is the content of reactivity plans covered at your Ops shift brief? (i.e. do they discuss how much water they plan to add during the shift, rod motion predicted, etc..) 2. If they deviate from said plan what actions are necessary (i.e. contact Shift Manager, Reactor Engineer, STA, etc...or would it just be between the SRO and RO) 3. Would they only elevate it to Reactor Engineering if the deviation was significant, or would they call you for any change at all regardless of how small? With our purchase by Entergy, I think we will start pursuing using RHOBAL for upcoming cycles, just need to figure out how to get through this cycle. Xenon prediction tools

Palisades has utilized a xenon prediction tool called XENSAM since the mid-90's. This program was obtained from another plant at the time so we do not have detailed basis information on the program. As such, we are challenged in continuing to use XENSAM and meet the SOER 03-2 Rec. 4 items and have discontinued its use until we can meet those recommendations or implement another predictive tool.
